Breast milk or formula only — no solid food yet. The NHS advises waiting until around 6 months before introducing solids.
Formula: 5–6 feeds a day, 120–180 ml. Another growth spurt is common around 3 months.
Nappy size
Size 2–3, 4–7 kg.
Development at this stage
- Holds head steady when upright
- Babbles and laughs out loud
- Reaches purposefully for toys
- Brings hands together
Care & things to watch
- Bathing: 2–3 times a week is enough
- Daily vitamin D drops continue if breastfed
- 12-week vaccinations: 6-in-1 (2nd dose), MenB (2nd dose) and rotavirus (2nd dose)
- 16-week vaccinations: 6-in-1 (3rd dose) and pneumococcal (1st dose)
- Vary head position during the day for head shape
- A growth spurt around 3 months often brings extra feeding and the odd restless night — temporary, no cause for concern
