Baby at 3–4 months: sleep, feeding and development
Stage: 3–4 months
Sleep
14–15 hoursper 24 hours
1.5–2 hoursawake between naps
45 min–2 hoursper nap
3–4 naps; nights getting longer
Feeding
Breast milk or formula only — the AAP advises introducing solids around 6 months, when your baby shows readiness signs.
Formula: 5–6 feeds a day, 4–6 oz (120–180 ml). Another growth spurt is common around 3 months.
Diaper size
Size 1–2, 8–18 lb (4–8 kg).
Development at this stage
- Holds head steady when upright
- Babbles and laughs out loud
- Reaches purposefully for toys
- Brings hands together
Care & things to watch
- Bathing: 2–3 times a week is enough
- Daily vitamin D (400 IU) continues if breastfed
- 4-month vaccinations: DTaP, Hib, polio (IPV), pneumococcal and rotavirus (2nd doses) — given at the 4-month well-child visit
- Vary head position during the day for head shape
- A growth spurt around 3 months often brings extra feeding and the odd restless night — temporary, no cause for concern
